To Make "People feel OK"

Tue Sep 5, 2023

A recent video online - caught my attention today. While the ostensible reason of the video is to bring in pay parity - the answers of the little boy - are sure to make you stop, pause and reflect.

In the video, the interviewer asks this young boy a few standard questions that she has been asking all the other kids as well and here's the conversation ( 0.33 sec):Interviewer: What does your mom do?
Boy: She works at Legoland.
I: Nice ok. Do you know how much she makes?
(The kid glances at his mom and shrugs. The mother says, “Say any price.”)
B: Any price. (The boy utters the mom’s response, literally.)
I: What’s your dream job? What do you want to do when you grow up?
B: I am gonna be a doctor.
I: How much do you want to make?
B: I am gonna make… people feel okay!

I couldn't agree more - isn't that what doctors are supposed to do? In fact - isn't that what all of us are supposed to do - Bring in empathy, care, and capability to make people, processes, teams, and organisations a little better than how we found them? And in the process- we grow as individuals & professionals. When managers genuinely care for their teams - emotional engagement at work improves. As per research published in the Journal of Leadership & Organization Studies - there are three pre-conditions for a great engagement at work: Meaningfulness of work, being trusted to do a good job and having access to manager and resources when needed. And all of these can be done when the intention is to make "People Feel Okay"
